It was with great sadness that I received the news about Sr. Kateri Koverman’s death on October 5th.

Anyone who knew her, loved her, because she lived her entire life thinking of others. I had the blessed experience of meeting Sr. Kateri when educators from the Holy Land were hosted by the Sisters of Charity at their beautiful Motherhouse in 2011. After hearing about the plight of our Palestinian Christians she called me and said, “I think I can help you.” This simple statement grew into a gigantic gift.

In 2012, Sister Kateri joined our HOPE pilgrimage and she gave special presentations to teachers, students and parents in the Holy Land regarding how to deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a problem suffered by many of our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. She brought so much compassion and love to the Palestinians…but never sympathy. She taught them how to defuse anger and replace it with HOPE.

I will never forget the words of one of the parents in Nablus, who called me aside and asked, “Please, can we keep Sister with us for a few days?” She was loved by all and will forever be remembered in the Holy Land by the children, who loved her and appreciated her wisdom and counsel. The picture of the children below tells her story the best.

Rest in peace, dear Sr. Kateri. You will be missed, but your gentleness will forever be remembered in the many lives you touched. We will continue to pray for you and to ask you to intercede for our HOPE program.
